Drunk Driving & Crime Victim Compensation Funds

Drunk driving car crash

Many victims of drunk drivers face a grim reality: the drunk driver either doesn’t have liability insurance or doesn’t have enough coverage to fully compensate him. The situation adds insult to injury as the injured person struggles to pay his doctors and therapists and the financial stress of forced time-off from work while attempting to recover from his injuries.

Of course, driving under the influence of alcohol is a crime in Missouri. Some monetary relief is available to Missouri crime victims on a relatively immediate basis through the Crime Victims’ Compensation Program.

Kids & Cars: More Kids Hit By Cars in September

KidsAndCars.org

Schools across the U.S. are in full swing come September — so it’s no wonder that more children are hit by cars during this month than any other, according to Kids Safe Worldwide. This time of year, kids, drivers and bus drivers need to be especially vigilant about traffic and pedestrian safety. It all starts with avoiding distractions.

For drivers, that means:

  • Put down the phone
  • Avoid any types of distractions in school zones — no talking or texting (even on hands-free devices), no loud stereo, don’t pick-up dropped items
  • Slow down — especially in school zones
  • Be mindful of children who might dart between cars and buses
  • Obey all traffic signals and signage around schools
  • Follow your school’s protocol for drop-off and pick-up
  • Never stop with any part of your car over a crosswalk

For kids, that means:

  • Follow your school’s instructions for loading and unloading buses
  • Go through your schools bus safety program
  • If walking to school, have parental permission
  • Before walking alone, map out a safe route and practice with an adult first
  • Obey all crosswalk signals and signage around schools
  • When crossing streets, put the phone away and remove headphones
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing streets

Matt & Matt: Sports in the Community

Another summer is in the books and that means Matt and Matt have been busy working with their kids’ respective sports teams.

Blue Devils Baseball

Matt Devoti has served as the assistant coach of his son’s 11U Affton Athletic Association baseball team for the past two years. Matt is thrilled to have the opportunity to spend time with his son, Nick, who plays catcher for the Blue Devils. Again this year, the firm made a generous donation to the team, which helped offset the cost of uniforms, batting cage sessions and two tournament entries. All 14 Blue Devil players attend St. Gabriel the Archangel School in St. Louis Hills; and they have played together on various teams since t-ball in Kindergarten.

CYC Soccer

As the summer winds down, Matt Casey is gearing up for another Catholic Youth Council (CYC) soccer season. For the past three years, Matt has served as the Lay Director of CYC soccer for his parish, Little Flower Catholic Church. Matt does a great deal of behind-the-scenes, administrative work to ensure kids from Little Flower have the opportunity to play. CYC soccer is very popular in St. Louis, so taking on the role of parish soccer director is a major task. Matt organizes coach, player and team registrations, orders and distributes uniforms, and schedules practice fields for the teams. His daughter, Evelyn, plays soccer for the parish on a Girls 11U team.

Employee Spotlight: Stephanie Perry

Stephanie Perry

When you call our office, chances are you will speak to Stephanie Perry — our invaluable Legal Assistant. Stephanie lives in Hamel, IL with her husband, Tony, and her 10 year old son, Tyler. She has worked for Casey & Devoti for five years, so we thought it would be fun to get to know her a little better. Here are some fun facts about Stephanie:

Q: What are your official duties?

A: EVERYTHING! On a typical day, I answer telephones, send medical requests, review medical records, type correspondence to clients, prepare pleadings for filing and prepare cases for trial. You name it, I do it.

Q: What did you do prior to working here?

A: I worked as a Paralegal for six years prior.

Q: Educational background?

A: I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with Specialization in Human Resources Management from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville.

Q: How far do you commute each day?

A: 90 miles round trip!

Q: Favorite thing to do when not at work?

A: I enjoy spending time with my family.

Q: Favorite thing to do when you are in STL?

A: I don’t travel to St. Louis much, except for work. Rarely do I or my family venture to the west side of the Mississippi River. If we do, it’s to go to Six Flags, the Magic House or a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game.

Q: If you had to eat the same meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A: Spaghetti

Q: Favorite movie?

A: 50 First Dates

Q: Favorite book?

A: I don’t have time to read. The last book I read was probably to Tyler when he was younger.

Q: Biggest pet peeve?

A: I really can’t stand being ignored when I’m talking to someone. And, I don’t like when people wait until the last minute to change lanes when the lane ends.

Q: If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would buy?

A: I would probably pay off my house and car.

Q: If you were stranded on an island, what three things would you bring?

A: If people count, then definitely my husband, my son and water. If people don’t count, then water, sunscreen and a pillow. I’m practical!
