AAA Study: 58% of Teen Accidents Caused by Distracted Driving

The Huffington Post recently published an article showing the alarming statistics of distracted driving among teens.   The article highlights a study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, which showed that 58% of teen accidents (6 out of 10 accidents) were caused by distracted driving – a percentage much higher than officials first thought.  The most common distractions were interacting with passengers and cell phone usage.

The problem of distracted driving is an epidemic among all drivers, but this article highlights the need for early intervention, awareness and education among young drivers.

Last Fall, Matt Casey and Matt Deovti decided to partner with EndDD.org (End Distracted Driving) to deliver the ‘End Distracted Driving Student Awareness Initiative’ to area high school students.  They are addressing  the epidemic of distracted driving one school, one student, one presentation at a time.

So far, they have delivered this important safety message to 350 students at St. Mary’s High School in St. Louis and 315 students at John F. Kennedy High School in Ballwin.  They have two additional presentations set for April, as follows:

St. John Vianney High School (Kirkwood, MO) – 150 sophomores on Thursday, April 9th at 9 a.m.

Ste. Genevieve High School (Ste. Genevieve, MO) – 750 students on Wednesday, April 22nd at 1:30 p.m.
