Travel Safe

Here we go…pulling bags out of our basements, dusting off those bags, and packing them into the family car. Tucking gifts into the car between the luggage and finding games to entertain the kids and grandkids. Making arrangements for the family pet.

It’s that time of year when many of us are planning a late year trip to visit family and friends. Keep the following tips in mind when preparing for your safe holiday road trip:

  • Put down the electronic devices. This tip is obvious, but difficult for many of us. Texting while driving is becoming more and more prevalent and remains very dangerous. Fiddling with the radio and taking a call on your phone can be just as distracting.
  • Minimize distractions. The baby is crying. The three year old can’t find his favorite book. Ask your spouse or partner to work with the kids and keep your focus on the road.
  • Clean your windshield and head lights. Many of us travel at night so that the kids can sleep while we make time on the road. Confirm that you have a clear view through your vehicle’s windshield and that the light shown by your headlights is maximized for safe viewing ahead.
  • Make frequent stops. Don’t be afraid to take a break to stretch your legs and clear your mind. Driving in holiday traffic or for long distances is exhausting for those of us who don’t drive for a living.
  • Acquaint yourself with your route. This is especially true if you’re traveling to a destination for the first time. Familiarize yourself with route variations and road construction. Many states post construction information on their websites. For instance, visit MODot at: http://www.modot.org/stlouis/road_construction and http://traveler.modot.org/map.
  • Slow down in work zones. Work zones are full of hazards not faced on normal stretches of roadway, including distractions, course changes, uneven pavement and, of course, construction workers.

A family trip often means that the family home will be unoccupied for a handful of days. Also, consider:

  • Stopping newspaper service.
  • Purchasing timers that activate lights during evening hours.
  • Lock up the house.

Happy Holidays!

Educate Yourself on Making Your Automobile Claim

The Missouri Department of Insurance has published a guide aimed at educating Missourians on the nuts and bolts of making property damage claims following a motor vehicle collision.

The pamphlet does an excellent job of defining basic terms used by insurance companies in the evaluation and negotiation of property damage claims. The six page publication describes the difference between the related concepts of “diminished” and “actual cash” value and discusses topics ranging from the creation of repair estimates, the use of “aftermarket parts” in the creation of those estimates, claims for rental reimbursement and your loss of the use of your car and salvage value.

Casey and Devoti “Of Counsel” with Ste. Genevieve Firm

Matt and I recently formalized a relationship that we have shared for many years with Frank Elpers and Jackie Gonz in Ste. Genevieve. We are now “of counsel” with that firm, solidifying our commitment to assist people injured by the conduct of others in Ste. Genevieve, St. Francois, Perry, Cape Girardeau and Jefferson Counties.

Frank and Jackie have both practiced in Southeast Missouri for decades. Their practice focuses on assisting individuals in family matters such as divorce and child custody disputes, criminal defense cases, Social Security claims and bankruptcy. We have held a “law day” at their office in Ste. Genevieve on the third Thursday of the month for the last three years and have, as a result, made many new friends and clients. Frank’s relationship with our firm dates to the late 1980s; he and Tom–and later he, Jackie, Matt and I–have worked together on more than 100 personal injury cases since that time.

As “of counsel” to Elpers & Gonz, Matt and Matt will continue to be at that firm’s office at 748 Center Drive in Ste. Genevieve on the third Thursday of each month. We will continue to travel to folks that require our assistance who live south of St. Louis on an “as needed” basis. We will continue to represent people in personal injury and Workers’ Compensation claims across eastern Missouri. And, we will continue to file suits, litigate cases and try those cases to juries in Ste. Genevieve, Farmington, Perryville and Hillsboro as we have throughout the last nine years.

This is the second consecutive year that Matt Casey has been named a “Top Attorney” by the publication and the first year Matt Devoti received the recognition. Devoti was named a “Rising Star” by the magazine the previous three years. “Rising Stars” are top lawyers identified by the publication who are 40 years old or younger or who have been in practice 10 years or less.
